It isn’t always about money, but think about why your act really helps the venue out, whether it’s a perfect support match, or something uniquely marketable like an “album release party,” before you reach out. If you can craft your email pitches around their needs, they may be able to see beyond your lack of status on the local scene and help you out.

So, as much as I love the concept and the cute album covers, I came, I tried, and I left these doggy playlists behind. It’s back to The Gaslight Anthem on repeat for us.

Meredith Jane Monk is a world-renowned composer, singer, choreographer, filmmaker, artist, and writer. An absolute powerhouse of contemporary art and music alike, she’s been making waves as a composer and performer for over 50 years! Now 76 years old and showing no signs of slowing, Monk continues to be a leading force in extended vocal practices and techniques, and avant-garde performance practices. Her 21st century works have been published by ECM and Tzadik, and a few years back, she was a composer-in-residence at Carnegie Hall. Much is owed to her history of fearless experimentation and her forward-thinking eye toward the body and its sound-making capabilities.

The best way to keep fans engaged is to go back and see them regularly. In past articles I’ve spoke about the importance of building regionally before trying to tour in markets farther away from your home. This is one of the main reasons for that point.

Alex is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer from Sydney, Australia. He founded the post-rock band sleepmakeswaves, with which he has toured Asia, America, Europe and Australia. In his spare time he writes music for short films, produces bands and subsists on altogether too much coffee. Alex is the instructor of the free Soundfly course, Live Clicks and Backing Tracks.

Faders Up II is designed for producers with some hands-on mixing experience who are looking to expand their arsenal of skills and approaches, especially when it comes to working with a larger variety of artists and clients. You should be ready and excited to get your feet wet working on a set of audio tracks provided by the course (and that you bring in yourself).

Due to the way that YouTube’s algorithms have recently started moving users around based on several years worth of tracking their preferences, recommending content that is not always the obvious next step (because if you simply want the next track on an artist’s album, you’re probably already on Spotify), and then leveraging “discovery results” that are considered successful, thousands upon thousands of listeners streaming long-playing ambient music and sounds have been led directly to user Jackamo Brown‘s upload of Through the Looking Glass. The record had found its audience.

What does this mean? It means I’m going with my first instinct: D♭ Lydian, mainly because it’s just, like, in my feelings. But you could also say it’s E♭ Mixolydian if you’re enamored with the strong beat chord, or go back to A♭ major too because of the melodies. Or, why not classify this one as multimodal?

All of our mentored online courses come with six weeks of 1-on-1 professional coaching and feedback on your work. It’s like having a personal trainer, but for music! Whether you’re interested to dive deep into a topic covered by one of our songwriting and arranging courses, like Unlocking the Emotional Power of Chords, Orchestration for Strings, or The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony, or to work with a Soundfly Mentor directly, without a course, to achieve a specific goal, we can help you get there.

Tying your motifs together in musical phrases also allows you to link with lyrical phrases.  If a four line verse has a rhyming pattern like AABB — the first two lines’ ends rhyme with each other and the second two lines rhyme differently but again with each other — then making your melody do something similar can really lock in the idea for an audience.

Ira Arnstein, the minor early 20th century composer with religious leanings, believed that Cole Porter, a very influential composer and songsmith, enlisted spies to steal his songs and sued him for plagiarism of multiple works.

Let’s pretend that we have a guitar string tuned to play a note called middle C, which has a frequency of 1 Hz. (In real life, middle C has a frequency of 261.626 Hz, so if you want to think in terms of actual frequencies, just multiply all the numbers in the following paragraphs by 261.626.)
